Johanna Hatt, PhD, OCT, is an educator, researcher, and mezzo-soprano whose work examines the value of music education in school settings.
She recently completed her PhD in Music Education. Her dissertation, Valuing Music Education: A Comparative Study of Elementary Programs in Canada and the United States, used qualitative methods to examine elementary music education from teachers’ perspectives, with particular attention to funding, instructional time, institutional priorities, and administrative support.
She holds dual Canadian and U.S. citizenship, supporting her cross-border work in education, research, and performance. Johanna holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in Music Education and Vocal Performance and is a member of the Ontario College of Teachers. Her teaching experience spans both public and private school settings across Canada and Central Virginia.
Alongside her academic work, Johanna maintains a performance career as a mezzo-soprano. She performs with the Orpheus Choir of Toronto and has appeared with ensembles including the Guelph Chamber Choir, Opera York, and the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, as well as in collaboration with artists such as Keith & Kristyn Getty and The Tenors.
Her performance experience includes appearances at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Massey Hall, Roy Thomson Hall, and the Grand Ole Opry.
Her research interests include music education policy, teacher experience, the role of music within educational systems and institutional priorities, and the impact of administrative support.
